Jean-Claude Bélégou recent series : THE PROFESSIONALS 2016

les professionnels

After five thousand years of representation of the human face and body, one cannot make portraits, in the great tradition of the seated figure, without thinking about the Titiens, Ingres, Rembrandt, the Holbein... And I constantly got these ghosts of Lords and Princes, Duchesses and Las Meninas, floating in my head. Similarly one can't photograph a Cook without thinking of the famous photograph by August Sander in 1929 or, more or less consciously, of these daguerreotypes to the long immobile, hieratic and solemn poses.

I wanted to photograph these apprentices, these students, as young Lords, standing and suspended a moment; their Palace are of steel, aluminum, ceramic, glass, altuglass, and their weapons torches, grinders, screwdrivers and pliers.

And I was surprised by their capacity, their ability to embody a moment these majestic figures. All these shots were done in these first months of winter in artist residency in a vocational lycée promptly as if all this part and another, was long drawn and designed in advance.

This project was supported by the the Culture and Communication Ministry (regional cultural affairs directorate Normandy)

& the Ministry of National Education, Rouen.
